Allergy

Symptoms of nasal allergies may include:

  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Itchy nose and eyes
  • Pressure in the nose and cheeks
  • Nasal congestion
  • Post-nasal drip
  • Ear fullness and popping
  • “Allergic shiners” – dark circles under the eyes
  • “Allergic salute” – a line across the nasal bridge caused by an upward rubbing of the palm of the hand on the nose

Medical treatments include nasal saline rinses, oral antihistamines, decongestants, and nasal steroids. Although these can be effective, they treat symptoms of allergies, but not the underlying issue.

Long-term treatment options for allergies include immunotherapy (allergy shots or drops). Allergy shots or drops contain small amounts of these allergens and are given on a regular schedule so that the body gets used to them and no longer mounts a response to them.

Allergy testing is used to help identify the specific allergens that are causing the reactions. Commonly tested allergens in Dr. Chang’s office include species of grass, weeds, and trees; animal dander; mold; dust mites; and food. Allergy testing is quick and painless, and results are available within minutes.

Please call our office for more information on allergy testing and sublingual immunotherapy.
